Devotional Scriptures – Blessed to be a Blessing (Proverbs 11:25)
Proverbs 11:25 (ESV)
25 Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.
Have you ever tried to pour water into a bottle with pin hole? It is a futile exercise in frustration, not much gets through, especially for the effort. Now think about a pitcher with a wide opening, you can pour lots of water into that vessel. It is the same principle when it comes to pouring water out.
When trying to squeeze water out of a bottle with a pin hole, you have to place the vessel under a lot of pressure by squeezing quite hard, you run the danger of causing damage. Or just leave the bottle hanging upside down for a long period of time. Again this is an exercise that can only result in frustration.
Now, think about pouring water out of the pitcher, because the opening is so wide, you simply position and pour, no pressure, no squeezing needed. In 2 Timothy 2:21 the Bible calls us a vessel of honour, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.
How beautiful is that? God calls us a vessel of honour! There is, however, a requirement, we must stay away from things that are unfit for us. We are to flee from evil desires that come from being immature, such as senseless arguments that don’t profit anyone.
The Word of God encourages us through this interaction between the Apostle Paul and his mentee Timothy, to pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace and call on the Lord with a pure heart. As we are God’s servants with individual purposes, gifts, callings and responsibilities, we can draw a lot of value from what Paul is saying to Timothy.
As these vessels of honour we are to be kind to everyone and not quarrelsome, by arguing we are the equivalent of a bottle with a pin hole, not much getting in and not much coming out, just a whole lot of frustration.
Whereas, if we as servants of Jesus that are watchful over our soul, can mature to the point of being able to teach and can avoid becoming resentful; We become like that pitcher with a wide opening, we can be poured into by God and we can overflow with His goodness. We become a blessing out of the overflow.
Even when we are opposed because of our faith in Christ Jesus, we gently instruct in the hope that God will grant the opposer repentance, leading them to the knowledge of truth, and they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil (2 Tim 2:25-26).
When we bless others with what God has given to us, we become enriched, when we take the time to water others, we ourselves will be watered and refreshed with God’s goodness.
So the question I ask today is, what kind of vessel would you like to be? The water bottle with the pin hole that you have to squeeze. Or the pitcher with the wide opening operating in the overflow of God’s goodness?
Through Christ Jesus our Lord we have the power to decide.
Chose to be blessed, to be a blessing.
This is God’s word spoken in love. Remember The LORD our God, He is good and His mercies endure forever. May the blessings of the LORD overtake you and come upon you and His love surround you, for His glory. Have a blessed week. In Jesus Name.
