Hope of Righteousness by Faith (Galatians 5:5)
Galatians 5:5 (NKJV)
5 For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
Nothing else added, nothing else taken away! That was the rule when I was handed Grandma’s famous Jamaican black fruit cake recipe.
Although a life with Jesus is not the same as an old much loved family recipe, the encouragement remains the same for a powerful life in Christ.
The writer is encouraging us that faith in Christ Jesus is enough, we don’t need to add anything, and we don’t need to take anything away.
We are living in an age where it is fashionable to customise and merge vintage approaches to the current way we do things. In some areas and industries, it works but it can be very dangerous when it comes to walking with God.
We are being encouraged in Galatians 5:5 that our hope of righteousness does not lay in going back to being circumcised and trying to fulfil the law ourselves, because the hope of our righteousness lays in our faith in Christ Jesus, who came to fulfil the law (Matthew 5:17).
That’s enough, to go back to the old, is to suggest otherwise.
How could this be applied to our life?
What are the things that appear to be so innocent and godly, yet God has moved on to do a new thing and the old comfortable methods are tempting you out of a place of faith and trust in God?
Remember, it doesn’t have to be sin for it to qualify to be outside of the will of God.
Could it be, that we are between two seasons in our lives trying to merge something old with something new and calling it God’s will, yet that is not what God has purposed for us in this season?
Sometimes we can miss God because have not perceived that the season has changed. We have not let go of the old because we have not identified and laid hold of the new, if we are honest the old way of doing things may have stopped working for us a long time ago.
We are required to do something, rather than rush ahead of God, we are to eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith with the help of the Holy Spirit.
While others take matters into their own hands, we wait on God to give us confirmation before we move.
Then come what may, we have confidence that no matter what, God will see us through because we didn’t move on our own, we eagerly waited for the hope of righteousness by faith.
This week let’s keep our eyes on God not turning to the left or the right to be persuaded with anything that is not God’s sovereign will for our lives. Let’s ask Jesus to confirm the will of our Heavenly Father by the Holy Spirit in a way that only we know that it is Him.
