Devotional God Keeps His Promises Deuteronomy 8:18

God Keeps His Promises

18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Deuteronomy 8:18

I once saw my toddler cousin negotiate her way into an extra cookie by making a promise that she would be a good girl. She did not have the capacity to keep this promise.

I am sure that in her little heart she earnestly believed that she was going to be “a good girl” however both her mother and I knew otherwise.

With a knowing chuckle we looked at each other as we both observed the earnest futility eagerly staring back at us in the cutest little face ever.

She got her cookie and two hours later we were in throws of a full-on ‘terrible two’ tantrum.

My toddler cousin didn’t have the ‘capacity’ to keep the promise that she had made. The truth is quite a few of us lack the capacity to do a lot of what we intend in the heat of the moment.

Sure, it sounds good to the hearer and feels good for all concerned but when the rubber hits the road it is not always so easy to keep the promise that was made. For this we need the grace of God to help us in our weaknesses.

God is not like us human beings and I’m so glad about that. In Genesis 12:1-3 God makes a promise Abram before he changed his name to Abraham that he will bless him with the land of Canaan and bless his descendants and that by him all families of the earth will be blessed.

In Deuteronomy 8:18 we see God warning His people how to conduct themselves once they were in the promised land of Canaan. Many generations had passed, and Abraham had passed away yet here was God still keeping His promise to a dead man.

In Galatians 3:16 we see that Christ Jesus is called the ‘Seed of Abraham’ He died for the sin of all mankind. This is the fulfilment of the promise made to Abraham that all families of the earth would be blessed by him.

God, The Creator of the universe is so vast that only He has the capacity to keep His promise with all generations.

You and I can firmly trust in God to bring us through, God keeps his promises! Let’s pray this week that God will help us to remember the many ways that He was there for us so that we will always “Remember the LORD our God.” It is He that gave us the power to make it and obtain all that we have.

This is God’s word spoken in love. Remember The LORD our God, He is good and His mercies endure forever. May the blessings of the LORD overtake you and come upon you and His love surround you, for His glory. Have a blessed week. In Jesus Name.
