Devotional You Came Near When I Called Lamentations 3:57-58

You Came Near When I Called (Lamentations 3:57-58)

You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.” You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life.

Lamentations 3:57-58 (DARBY)

In the book of Lamentations we find the writer reeling from the reality of the prophesised Babylonian captivity that God had desperately and heart wrenchingly warned His people was going to happen.

We see the account of their shock, embitterment, despair and depression. Yet in the middle of these stages of grief in chapter 3 the writer remembers something important.

The writer recalls the reason why there is a glimmer of hope.

The writer communicates that his heart quietly remembers that ‘he belongs to God!’ Although he is faced with the bitterness of everything his people have been going through. The writer recalls the reason why there is a glimmer of hope.

In verse 22 he states without shaking and without question that “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. Verse 23 continues “They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

By the 26th verse he is saying “It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

In verse 57 – 58 we find the writer recalling from past experiences with God “You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.” You, Lord took up my case; you redeemed my life.”

In England where I am from, we have a term called ‘the stiff upper lip’ it means not displaying how you feel when you are upset, the expectation is to keep quiet put on a brave face and just get on with it.

There are instances in the Bible when we are called to endure and not to complain however, when faced with hardship God has given us a safe place to vent in His presence. When it’s just you and Him, Psalm 91:1 calls it the secret place of The Most High, with God you don’t need to have a stiff upper lip you can pour your heart out to Him.

In fact, in Jeremiah 33:3 God encourages the prophet to “Cry out to me” and God promised that He will answer him and show him great and mighty things which he knows not. This was while the prophet was shut away in the prison court.

What areas in your life do you need to vent to God about? I encourage you to cry out to God and He will answer you. It may not be in the format that you expect but God will answer. Jesus has taken up your case and like a lawyer He is defending you and speaking on your behalf.

This week let’s pray and thank Jesus as He has taken up our case and has redeemed our life. He comes near to us when we cry out to Him, so let’s cry out to God with the confidence that comes from our faith, that He will answer.

This is God’s word spoken in love. Remember The LORD our God, He is good and His mercies endure forever. May the blessings of the LORD overtake you and come upon you and His love surround you, for His glory. Have a blessed week. In Jesus Name.
